The Ferrufino family decided to enter the coffee business in 1992 and bought Finca Aurora in 2004. They instilled a love of coffee in their three children from an early age. Since they purchased Finca Aurora, the whole family has worked together to produce excellent coffee.
Over the years, they have invested in fair wages, safe living conditions, health care, food, and education for the workers. They also work with smaller producers in the region to help them improve their farming methods.
Conservation of nature is a top priority for the Ferrufino family. They work according to a "biodynamic" model. This means farming in harmony with the local ecosystem. They use only renewable energy and work diligently to preserve water resources and natural habitats. The farm is home to a variety of native trees that provide homes for many species of birds and wildlife. These trees also provide shade to the plantation and fertilize the soil with organic matter that protects the land from erosion, drought and flooding.
After selective hand harvesting, the cherry is crushed with an ecopulper. The parchment is then laid out to dry on drying beds or terraces on the farm. Finca Aurora is one of the first farms in Nicaragua with a fully integrated on-site coffee operation. Coffee is produced, washed and/or dried on the farm. The coffee is ground, sorted and packed at Beneficio Finca Aurora under the watchful eye of the farm team. This allows full control over quality throughout the process.
