About the coffee
About the coffee
This naturally processed coffee comes from the Harruu Bunnaqaa community in Guji, Oromia. Around 500 smallholder farmers grow and process their coffee cherries here—supported by community knowledge passed down through generations—at elevations between 1,900 and 2,200 meters above sea level.
Guji, part of the larger Oromia region, has a long history of coffee cultivation that is deeply rooted in Indigenous forms of land stewardship and social organization. Here, coffee is not just a plant but part of Gadaa traditions, local gatherings, and the sharing of peace and wisdom beneath the shade of the Harruu tree. The name Harruu Bunnaqaa itself brings together land, culture, and generosity: Harruu refers to the large tree where people gather, Bunna means coffee, and Naqaa stands for making and giving.
The ripe cherries are carefully hand-picked and dried in the sun on raised beds for about 22 days. At each stage, the farmers pay close attention to ensuring even drying and protecting the cherries from excessive heat or moisture. Hulling and sorting are carried out within the community to ensure full traceability and quality before the coffee is exported.
The result is a vibrant, complex cup that reflects the high elevations of Guji—bright, floral, and fruity, with layers of sweetness and spice. It speaks not only to altitude and soil, but to the living heritage, knowledge, and care of the Harruu Bunnaqaa community.
