Artist-Spotlight: Julija Musteikytė

Tell us a little bit about yourself

My name is Julija, I'm from Lithuania and have been living in Vienna for a bit more than two years. I enjoy long walks, a good cup of coffee and visiting exhibitions.

How did you get started with art?

As soon as I was able to lift a pencil. At some point, my parents got fed up with me 'illustrating' every book at home, and they decided to put me into art school. After finishing gymnasium, I studied sculpture restoration and worked for a few years. Now I'm taking a break from it and doing a few different things. One of those things is focusing on creative work.

How did you find your style?

Although pieces in the show seem to have a consistent style, I don't think I could commit to one specific art style. For me, it often depends on the materials I'm working with. One day I might make detailed illustrative watercolor pieces, on another day I might cover myself in paint and roll on a canvas. I keep all creative doors open.

Tell us a little bit about the art pieces.

I usually just sit down and pour whatever is in my imagination. There are no hidden meanings behind it. I rather try to impart warm and cozy feelings to whoever is looking. Night motives are quite present in some pieces because it's the time I'm most active creatively.

Do you have any goals you’re working towards? And if so, do you mind sharing?

I want to take more creative opportunities and connect with other creative people. I'm usually pretty shy when it comes to talking about my art and showing my work, so having my art pieces on display at Kaffemik was quite a big step.

What do you want people to know about you?

When I was little, my favorite TV show was Kommissar Rex. Back then I often dreamed about living in Vienna, solving crimes with my friend Rex and eating a Semmel every day. Although I'm not a detective and I don't have Rex(yet) it's interesting how life puts some things into place. I do eat quite a lot of Semmel.

What's your relationship with coffee?

Love and love relationship only. I used to work as a barista. I love making it, I love drinking it, and I love talking about it. Some time ago, I tried to drink matcha for a month instead of coffee. Saddest month of my life.

Where can people find you?

I'm not a big fan of social media, but for now the easiest way would be through Instagram. I'm working on having my own portfolio/website/shop now and will share more about it soon.
