About the coffee

JUMARP brings together farmers in the El Palto area in the Yamón district in the Utcubamba province in the Amazon region in northern Peru. Coffee cultivation in the Amazonian Andes in northern Peru, where JUMARP operates, began in the 1950s. For a long time, farming methods relied heavily on the use of agrochemicals. After many decades, this group decided to change the old methods and start sustainable coffee production in harmony with the jungle. JUMARP also realized that together they would be stronger in marketing their coffee. In this way and through certification, they want to guarantee their members a regular income and improve the community's standard of living. The 188 members* all produce organic and fairly traded coffee. One of the association's priorities over the past two years has been increasing productivity. To achieve this, JUMARP invests half of the premiums it receives in renewing crops and switching to organic farming methods. Another large part of the bonus goes into the fund for educational programs and the construction of schools. The producers affiliated with JUMARP all cultivate small plots of land. In total, the 188 producers grow coffee on 549 hectares in the “Selva Alta” in northern Peru. This is a special ecosystem in Peru and Mexico with dense and moist forests.

Until recently, we were able to obtain this coffee from a subgroup of 30 women. Unfortunately, we weren't able to do that this harvest. Of course, we are trying to be able to offer this coffee again as female-farmed.
