JUMARP brings together farmers in El Palto located within the Yamón district of the Utcubamba province in the Amazonas region of northern Peru. Coffee cultivation in the Amazonian Andes of northern Peru, where JUMARP operates, began in the 1950s.
Farming methods have traditionally relied heavily on the use of agrochemicals. After many decades, this group decided to ditch traditional farming methods and started sustainable coffee production in harmony with the jungle. JUMARP also recognized that together they would be stronger in marketing their coffee.
Through certification they want to guarantee their members a regular income and improve the standard of living for the community. The 188 members all produce organic* and fair trade coffee. One of the Association's priorities over the past two years has been to increase productivity.
To achieve this, JUMARP invests half of the premiums received in the renewal of crops and the conversion to organic farming methods. Another large part of the premium goes on to fund educational programs and the construction of schools. The producers affiliated with JUMARP all cultivate small plots. In total, the 188 producers grow coffee on 549 hectares in the "Selva Alta" in northern Peru. This is a special ecosystem in Peru and Mexico with dense and humid forests.
*Due to the fact that Alpha Coffee is not, itself, certified as an organic roastery we can only mention that the coffee is organically grown.
