Sonia Bolaños entered coffee production at fourteen, working after school on neighboring farms to support her family. These early years built her knowledge of harvest labor and farm life. Later she found work farther from home and met Deimar Muñoz on his family’s farm, La Esperanza. Their partnership grew into a family with three children and a grandson.


Sonia now manages three hectares of the 5.5 hectare farm. Together with Deimar she has expanded the property and diversified its plantings. Alongside older Caturra plots, they recently added Pink Bourbon and Castillo in response to the growing presence of leaf rust in the area, even at elevations above 1800 meters.


The couple began selling coffee at differentiated prices in 2005 through the Los Naranjos association, but later sought more transparent structures and clearer quality feedback. Working with Esnaider Ortega Gómez and Didier Ortega, Sonia attended cupping sessions and applied new approaches to cultivation and processing. From 2019 into 2021, a family emergency required them to sell coffee before drying in order to secure immediate income. Today Sonia is again fully focused on processing her harvest for the specialty market. This microlot represents years of learning, steady investment in quality, and a growing sense of agency over how their coffee is valued and shared.
