About the coffee
About the coffee
The coffee from the Wasawanaba group comes from eleven smallholder producers led by Hezekiah Sibwira, a coffee farmer and vice chairman of the village of Wasawanaba. Together, the group manages around 12,000 SL28 coffee trees distributed across small farms near the villages of Wasawanaba, Kyomwenda, and Sibahikwa. Despite this collective effort, their entire harvest delivered during the first season amounted to only 2,600 kilograms of coffee cherry, illustrating both the small scale of production and the challenges many producers in Western Uganda continue to face.
For many years, the group sold coffee to different buyers without gaining insight into how their coffee was processed or marketed after leaving the farm. Through Empaako Collective, producers began receiving additional compensation for carefully sorting and floating their cherries before delivery—practices that had previously gone unrewarded. This stronger connection between quality and payment encouraged renewed investment in farm management and post-harvest practices.
Following the first harvest, the project provided the group with pruning and stumping tools as well as new seedlings to support the long-term renewal of their coffee gardens. The resulting coffees stood out for their brightness and clarity, reflecting both the producers' commitment to improving quality and the value of closer collaboration throughout the supply chain.
