About the coffee
About the coffee
This naturally processed coffee also comes from the Harruu Bunnaqaa community in Guji, Oromia. Around 500 smallholder farmers cultivate their coffee at elevations ranging from 1,900 to 2,200 meters above sea level. Rooted in shared knowledge passed down through generations, the coffee is grown and processed with great care and collective responsibility.
Guji, part of the wider Oromia region, has a long-standing relationship with coffee. Local coffee culture is deeply intertwined with traditional systems of land stewardship, social organization, and exchange. Coffee plays a central role in Gadaa traditions, community gatherings, and the sharing of time, peace, and wisdom beneath the shade of the Harruu tree. The name Harruu Bunnaqaa itself reflects this connection: Harruu refers to the gathering tree, Bunna means coffee, and Naqaa stands for making, giving, and sharing.
For this grade, ripe coffee cherries are carefully hand-picked and then sun-dried on raised beds for approximately 22 days. Throughout the process, the community closely monitors drying conditions to ensure balance and stability. Hulling and sorting are carried out collectively within the community, ensuring transparency, full traceability, and quality control before export.
The resulting cup is vibrant and layered, offering floral and fruity notes supported by gentle sweetness and subtle spice. The differences compared to Grade 1 are nuanced — so nuanced, in fact, that we chose to work with both grades, as each is equally striking and beautifully expresses the character, dedication, and living heritage of the Harruu Bunnaqaa community.
